New Jersey Resident Caught at New York Airport, Accused of Orchestrating $250,000,000 Gold Theft Ring

Authorities have detained a New Jersey resident at a major New York airport as he prepared to board an international flight out of the country during an investigation into a sprawling gold theft operation.

The 35-year-old, identified as Muzamil Ahmed, was taken into custody at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 4 while attempting to board a flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, reports NJ.com.

Prosecutors in Tarrant County, Texas, had issued warrants charging him with engaging in organized crime for theft, financial abuse of the elderly and money laundering.

Investigators describe Ahmed as a central figure who created shell companies to move proceeds from the scheme, which directed victims to withdraw savings and purchase gold bars or cryptocurrency before couriers posing as federal agents collected the assets.

The operation funneled stolen gold to a refinery in Florida for melting and conversion into cryptocurrency that was then sent overseas.

More than 40 people have faced indictment in the ring, which affected seniors in Tarrant County and across the nation with total losses exceeding $250 million.

One victim reportedly lost $2 million, and authorities have seized over $130 million in related gold during the probe that included raids on jewelry stores.

Ahmed has been extradited to Texas, where a judge set his bond at $3 million on the organized crime charge and required surrender of his passport along with GPS monitoring if released.

Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells stated that anyone preying on local seniors will face pursuit.
