
A rural North Carolina Baptist church is facing fallout after its former pastor allegedly stole nearly $58,000 from its funds for personal use.
The proposed charges include 16 felony counts of embezzlement totaling $57,934.13 from Happy Home Baptist Church in Nakina, reports The NC Beat.
Devin Cyrus Carroll, 23, of Conway, South Carolina, was arrested on August 26th and booked into the Columbus County Detention Center on a $75,000 secured bond.
Arrest warrants allege he embezzled the funds on or around February 27th, 2024, while employed at the church before serving as pastor from May 2024 until July 2025.

The funds allegedly covered $42,925 in Advance America loan payments, $14,685.98 in personal expenses such as restaurants and retail purchases across three states, horseback riding, a cellphone bill, legal fees, and a veterinary visit, plus $323.15 in additional retail purchases.
Carroll was on pretrial release for a pending South Carolina charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor when arrested.
His next court date is September 17th, and the church, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, did not respond to media inquiries.
