Federal prosecutors have charged a Louisiana mayoral candidate and a Jamaican national with fraudulent voter registration and illegal voting.
Bridget Johnson, 53, of Cotton Valley, has been charged with fraudulent voter registration and voting by an alien, while Michael Wedderburn, 52, of Jamaica, has been charged with voting by an alien after a federal grand jury returned an indictment, says the U.S. Department of Justice
Johnson lived in Webster Parish and campaigned for mayor of Cotton Valley in 2024.
Prosecutors claim she filled out an online Louisiana voter form under Wedderburn’s name on July 14, 2024, and wrongly declared that he held U.S. citizenship.
Investigators say Wedderburn, a non-citizen ineligible to vote in Louisiana, then cast ballots on November 5, 2024, in a federal contest and in the local mayoral election.
Johnson faces a maximum of five years in prison if convicted, and Wedderburn faces up to one year plus financial penalties.
Says United States Attorney Zachary A. Keller,
“Protecting the integrity of Louisiana’s elections—and our national elections—is essential to protecting our constitutional republic. The right to vote is sacred. When individuals undermine that process through fraud or abuse, they threaten the public’s confidence in a fair and lawful election system. Our Office will continue to safeguard the sanctity of the vote and hold accountable those who violate our laws.”
The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office.
