A business owner in Indiana lost more than $18,000 when scammers impersonating her bank tricked her into sharing login details.
Vanessa Walker says she received a call claiming suspicious activity hit her Regions Bank business account, reports WRTV.
“They were telling me if I didn’t do it, that my account was going to be locked for 90 days. As a business owner, that can’t be done. I was getting very frustrated.”
Scammers directed her to a fake website displaying the bank’s logo where she entered her user ID and password.
They then instructed her to dial codes that forwarded incoming calls to them so they could manage any verification attempts.
The following day an electronic transfer removed $18,750 from the account.
Scammers often obtain banking credentials from data breaches and the dark web before spoofing caller IDs to appear legitimate.
The Federal Trade Commission says imposter scams triggered $12.5 billion in losses in 2024 representing a 25% rise from the previous year.
Experts recommend hanging up on unexpected calls and contacting the lender using the number printed on the back of a bank card instead.
Warning signs include urgent pressure tactics demands for one-time codes and requests to forward calls.
