Retirees in the highest-benefit states are lining up for the largest Social Security dollar increases in years as inflation keeps lifting living costs.
Advocacy groups project a 3.5% to 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, the biggest hike since 2023 and well above 2026’s 2.8% COLA, reports Fortune.
The official figure is due in mid-October, with the Social Security Administration expected to announce it on October 14th.
Nationwide, the average monthly benefit for a retired worker is $2,071, according to Social Security Administration data cited in the report.
New Jersey retirees hold the highest median check at $2,256 a month and could see about $79 to $81 more under those estimates, versus roughly $72 to $75 for the national average.
Connecticut follows at $2,249, then Delaware at $2,225, New Hampshire at $2,215 and Maryland at $2,181.
Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, Massachusetts and Utah round out the top tier with median benefits from $2,144 down to $2,090.
Every recipient gets the same percentage COLA, but higher baseline checks mean larger cash gains in dollar terms.
