Federal prosecutors have obtained a guilty plea from a Missouri man who helped operate a Jamaican lottery scam that defrauded victims of roughly $96,000.
Christopher Gibbon, 55, admitted in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud after he received cash packages and wire transfers while mailing forged government documents to victims, says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Gibbon kept 20 percent of the proceeds and forwarded the balance to accomplices in Jamaica who falsely told victims they had won large prizes but first had to pay taxes and fees.
He mailed letters that co-conspirators sent him via WhatsApp to make the scheme appear legitimate to targets in the United States.
The activity spanned from December 2016 through July 2018 and involved eight victims whose payments triggered an investigation after a New Jersey resident sent multiple packages.
Gibbon vanished shortly after speaking with postal inspectors in 2018 and was later arrested in Connecticut.
Sentencing is set for December 21 on a charge that carries up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and other agencies conducted the investigation.
