President Trump is dismissing warnings about artificial intelligence (AI) endangering humanity as overblown and a hoax while resisting fresh calls for government oversight of the technology.
The remarks came amid growing industry and political concerns about unchecked AI development, reports The Hill.
Trump tells reporters that the concerns over AI are being overblown.
“We can put guardrails, we can do this and that, but I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that … shouldn’t be bringing it up, and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen.”
He also says in a post on Truth Social that the only control or guardrails AI needs is a strong and smart president, adding that the US already has that.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”
A June poll from the nonpartisan AI Policy Institute found 78 percent of likely voters favor mandatory standards while only 8 percent support no regulation.
Stocks reacted with the Nasdaq Composite falling 0.9 percent and the S&P 500 dropping 0.6 percent.
The administration’s June 2026 executive order promotes AI innovation and security through private-sector collaboration and explicitly rejects mandatory licensing or burdensome regulation to avoid stifling progress against competitors like China.
The White House plans a meeting with AI executives this week.
