Illinois Man Receives 12-Year Sentence for Home Burglary Involving Stolen Deputy Badge and Rifle

An Illinois resident has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of residential burglary and other charges tied to a major theft from a home in McHenry County.

The case centered on the March 2023 break-in at a residence in unincorporated Marengo, reports Lake McHenry Scanner.

Sean A. Fitzpatrick, 50, of Poplar Grove stood trial on counts that included theft over $100,000 and possession of a stolen firearm.

His co-defendant, Scott T. Henrie, 37, of Janesville, Wisconsin, pleaded guilty to residential burglary and received a four-year term through a negotiated deal.

Stolen items included a Ford F-250 pickup with snowplow, a Lexus sedan, a John Deere Gator, a trailer, jewelry, cash, appliances and a Rock River Arms rifle along with a Cook County sheriffโ€™s deputy badge.

The total value of the property taken ranged from $100,000 to $500,000 according to court records.

Investigators with the McHenry County Sheriffโ€™s Office recovered much of the loot after tracing it to one of the suspectsโ€™ homes.

Prosecutors described how the pair used the stolen truck and trailer to haul away goods over two days.

McHenry County Stateโ€™s Attorney Randi Freese highlighted the sheriffโ€™s office efforts that led to the recovery of victimsโ€™ belongings and the successful prosecution.

The sentencing came after delays following the July 2025 conviction.
