A Mississippi woman has been arrested after authorities say she stole more than $18,000 from an elderly victim by forging stolen checks and cashing them for her own benefit.
Shelia Williams, a 70-year-old resident of Golden, Mississippi, faces multiple forgery and theft charges, as well as a charge of financial exploitation of an elderly person, following an investigation by the Franklin County Sheriffโs Office in Alabama, reports the NBC and ABC affiliate WTVA.
The case began in late June of this year after the elderly victim discovered that approximately $18,206 had disappeared from a bank account and reported the suspected theft to authorities.
According to investigators, Williams took five checks from the victimโs vehicle without permission and forged the victimโs signature on them.
Authorities say Williams admitted to the scheme during an interview with investigators and told them she spent the stolen money on personal expenses.
The victimโs bank later reimbursed the full amount that had been taken, according to the sheriffโs office.
Authorities have set a $20,000 bond for Williams.
Following the arrest, the Franklin County Sheriffโs Office urged the public to regularly monitor their bank accounts, keep checkbooks secure and report suspicious financial activity to their bank or local law enforcement.
