AI-Powered Scams Result in $893,000,000 Drained From Bank Accounts in One Year: Malwarebytes

Americans have lost a whopping $893 million to AI-powered scams in just one year, according to a new report.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Report now includes AI scam specifics, with 22,364 AI-related complaints in 2025 totaling exactly $893,346,472 in reported losses, reports Malwarebytes.

AI-generated scripts are supercharging classic fraud schemes such as government impersonation, business email compromise and romance scams.

Many of the scams involve bank account takeovers or impersonations using generated voices and deepfakes, using stolen agency logos and AI audio to convince victims to authorize transfers or provide access.

Victims reported funds disappearing rapidly from accounts after interactions with what appeared to be legitimate representatives.

The FBI and financial institutions recommend verifying identities via official contact channels and limiting public sharing of voice and video content that scammers can reuse.
