Wells Fargo Customer Loses $19,460 in Walmart Text Message Scam: Report

A Wells Fargo customer has lost thousands of dollars to scammers pretending to be the bank’s fraud investigators.

It all started when the unnamed woman received a text in January 2025 about an attempted fraud purchase at a Walmart, reports Coral Springs News.

The customer denied the purchase, but then got a phone call from the same number from someone who identified himself as a Wells Fargo investigator.

He told her there was a federal fraud investigation into her bank’s managers and tellers, and that she needed to take measures to protect the funds in her account.

The pretend Wells Fargo investigator told her to go to her local branch, withdraw the money in her account and put it into another Wells Fargo account to protect her money. The scammer gave the woman the number of a debit card to put the money on.

The victim went to her local Wells Fargo branch and deposited the $19,460 in her account onto the debit card.

Once she completed the transaction, the victim says she had a “strange feeling” and returned to her branch to talk to the staff. The staff told her there was no federal investigation, and she realized was scammed.

Local law enforcement were able to tack down one of the alleged scammers, 26-year-old Samarah Comrie, who is now facing a charge of grand theft. Investigators say they discovered the debit card the victim transferred her funds to was allegedly in Comrie’s name.
