The token climbed to $0.126 on Sunday, its highest level since December last year. The rally ignited right after the network said on October 8 that it is \u201cactively considering becoming an L1,\u201d a step it pitched as the route towards becoming the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptopolitan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-26-1024x858.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-317901\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Starknet Says It Can Only Be as Safe as Ethereum\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson asked his followers whether going L1 for \u201cpost-quantum agility\u201d was a good idea or a bad one. His reasoning is based on how roll ops operate. As a layer 2 on Ethereum, Starknet borrows its security from Ethereum and therefore can only be as quantum-safe as the chain underneath it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Starknet becoming an L1 for post-quantum agility: good idea or bad idea?<\/p>\n<p>Two giant elements we need to pay attention to:<br \/>(1) The quantum threat.<br \/>It may be MUCH closer than we think.<\/p>\n<p>(2) AI.<br \/>It&#8217;s becoming more powerful than we can process.<br \/>Is anyone willing to bet how much time\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bLsxzwX2mQ\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/bLsxzwX2mQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eli Ben-Sasson | Starknet.io (@EliBenSasson) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EliBenSasson\/status\/2108110129572741426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">October 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He highlighted that Ethereum had to move \u201creal fast,\u201d and that if it doesn\u2019t, the option to become an L1 can be on the cards. Running its own chain would allow Starknet to ship security updates on its own clock. Its proofs already rely on hash functions, which are considered quantum- resistant and a <a href=\"https:\/\/starkware.co\/blog\/the-architecture-advantage-starknets-quantum-readiness-roadmap\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roadmap<\/a> which was published on June 30 covers replacing the remaining elliptic-curve pieces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ben-Sasson Borrowed an Ethereum Researcher\u2019s Warning\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before this announcement, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake asked the blockchain and crypto industry to \u201ccalmly begin planning for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptopolitan.com\/justin-drake-ai-could-break-crypto-signature\/\">\u2018bunker mode.\u2019<\/a>\u201d His concern is that AI-driven math could potentially break ECDSA, the signature scheme that secures Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets, before quantum computers ever get there. He says that in the worst case scenario, this happens in months rather than years. His calls for \u201cbunker mode\u201d is to move funds to new addresses where the public keys have never been exposed while at the same time cautioning against rushing to do this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threat was echoed the next day with Ben-Sasson highlighting that quantum-computing and fast-moving AI together call for bunker mode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Ethereum L2s Are Shutting Down Instead<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal comes during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptopolitan.com\/which-networks-are-winding-down-in-2026\/\">rough stretch for rollups<\/a>. Blast said on Oct. 2 it would wind down because running the chain cost more than it earned, and gave users until Oct. 26 to withdraw to mainnet. Abstract, the chain tied to Pudgy Penguins, announced its own shutdown in early October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starknet is in a different spot, with roughly $168 million in total value locked. Its version of leaving Ethereum reads more like graduation than closure, and STRK buyers appear to be pricing it that way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Vote Has Been Scheduled Yet<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For all the price action, the L1 move is still just an idea. There\u2019s no formal proposal and no governance vote. StarkWare\u2019s own roadmap says any protocol-level change to Starknet needs approval through its governance process, and neither the Oct. 8 post nor Ben-Sasson\u2019s thread gave a timeline for a decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going independent would also leave Starknet fully responsible for its own security, a much heavier load than leaning on the second-largest blockchain. The token has already slipped back from its 24-hour high, and for now, the market is trading on intent and any governance proposal would give traders something firmer to price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<\/p><p class=\"inline-news-ad\" data-rand=\"0.064635\">The smartest crypto minds already read our newsletter.
