Federal prosecutors have charged 17 defendants with stealing more than $1,340,000 in Social Security benefits during a one-month enforcement surge.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department\u2019s National Fraud Enforcement Division, working with 11 U.S. Attorney\u2019s Offices and the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, brought the cases between August 21st and September 18th of 2026, says<\/a> the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say the defendants caused more than $1,340,000 in intended losses across retirement, disability and Supplemental Security Income programs.<\/p>\n

One Illinois case alleges that Eva Bratcher concealed her mother\u2019s body in a garage freezer for two years while collecting the deceased woman\u2019s Social Security and SNAP benefits, and also used an alternate Social Security number to take more food aid.<\/p>\n

In New York, prosecutors say David Darling withdrew $109,746 using his deceased brother\u2019s ATM card after Social Security kept depositing benefits into the account.<\/p>\n

Says Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Social Security Administration\u2019s benefits programs are meant to safeguard America\u2019s elderly and most vulnerable \u2014 not to bankroll fraudsters.<\/em><\/p>\n

Every dollar stolen is a dollar taken from a retiree\u2019s medicine, meals, or housing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the Trump administration is working with the Justice Department to root out benefit fraud and protect taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n
