A Pentagon personnel database has suffered a security breach that has placed sensitive data belonging to nearly 3 million people with military ties at risk.<\/p>\n

Unauthorized users accessed unencrypted personal information held by the Defense Manpower Data Center, reports<\/a> ABC News.<\/p>\n

The incident affected 2.76 million living people and 294,000 deceased individuals, with exposed data including Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth, contact details and military occupational specialties.<\/p>\n

The Defense Manpower Data Center maintains more than 60 million records on active-duty troops, civilians, contractors, retirees, veterans and family members.<\/p>\n

Says a US defense official,<\/p>\n

\u201cA Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) information system experienced unauthorized access of personally identifiable information by a small number of unauthorized users between October 2025 and July 2026. Upon discovery, DMDC immediately remediated the vulnerability.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A notification letter sent to the affected individuals says the hackers exploited a \u201csecurity vulnerability\u201d in a file-sharing system. The file-sharing system has since been made secure and the system has been restored.<\/p>\n

\u201cDMDC immediately initiated privacy and cybersecurity incident response actions in accordance with Office of Management and Budget at department guidelines and policies. We are taking appropriate actions to assess and enhance the cybersecurity posture of the DMDC system.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Affected individuals are being offered 12 months of credit monitoring and identity protection services through IDX.<\/p>\n
