An Illinois farmer has been sentenced to 42 months in prison and ordered to repay nearly $5 million after securing about $8.4 million in bank loans with false paperwork.<\/p>\n

Travis L. Murphy, 55, of Chandlerville must also serve three years of supervised release, reports<\/a> WAND.<\/p>\n

In 2016 Murphy secured an initial $1,762,000 line of credit from UMB Bank by claiming a grain complex cost about $2.65 million to build when the actual cost was about $986,000, and he also submitted false tax returns.<\/p>\n

The false documents led the bank to extend the first loan and later loans that reached about $8.4 million before Murphy tried to wipe out the debts in bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

The scheme came to light in U.S. Bankruptcy Court with help from the U.S. Trustee Program and chapter 7 trustee Andrew S. Erickson, and Judge Mary P. Gorman denied the discharge in a 2020 opinion.<\/p>\n

A federal grand jury in the Central District of Illinois indicted Murphy for bank fraud in 2023, and he pleaded guilty in 2025.<\/p>\n

At sentencing on September 21st, 2026, the court ordered him to pay $4,966,624.01 in restitution to UMB Bank.<\/p>\n

News coverage summarizing the government evidence at sentencing said,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe misrepresentation caused UMB Bank to extend the initial loan and other loans based on that false information and false tax returns Murphy provided to UMB Bank.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

UMB Bank, which is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, had approximately $72.35 billion in total assets as of the second quarter, according to the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n
