Visa and Mastercard are paying $167.5 million to settle claims they blocked independent ATMs from offering lower fees.<\/p>\n

ClassAction.org reports<\/a> the deal covers U.S. consumers who paid unreimbursed surcharges at non-bank ATMs from October 24th of 2007 through August 14th of 2026.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit said the networks\u2019 rules stopped independent ATM operators from discounting access fees when a cheaper competing network could process the withdrawal, pushing cardholders to pay more.<\/p>\n

According<\/a> to the settlement administrator\u2019s portal, Visa and Mastercard prevented independent automated teller machine from discounting or charging cardholders \u201ca lower access fee if transactions could be processed on competing networks that cost less than the Visa or Mastercard networks.\u201d Subsequently, consumers paid higher access fees to use independent ATMs than they would otherwise have.<\/p>\n

Under the settlement, Visa is handing out $88,775,000 while Mastercard will pay $78,725,000. After fees and costs, valid claimants share the fund pro rata.<\/p>\n

A federal judge in the District of Columbia granted preliminary approval on August 14th of 2026. Claims are open through February 10th of 2027 on the settlement administrator\u2019s portal, NonbankATMSurchargeSettlement.com, and a final approval hearing is set for February 17th of 2027.<\/p>\n

Despite agreeing to the settlement, Visa and Mastercard deny any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

A related ATM surcharge lawsuit against the two payment card networks settled for $197.5 million in 2024, as previously reported<\/a>. In that lawsuit, Visa and Mastercard were accused of conspiring with major banks to prevent independent ATM operators in the US from charging lower fees.<\/p>\n
