Thousands are receiving millions in debt relief after Massachusetts\u00a0prohibited a debt-buying shop from doing business in the state after accusing it of seizing cars to pressure payments.<\/p>\n

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell says<\/a> a consent judgment with Judgment Acquisitions Unlimited, Champion Funding Inc., and owner Andrew Metcalf delivers about $52 million in relief to more than 6,000 Massachusetts consumers.<\/p>\n

The deal permanently bars the Massachusetts-based defendants from buying, selling, or collecting debts tied to state residents and from getting a Massachusetts debt collector license.<\/p>\n

The AG alleges the firms seized vehicles that had no link to a car loan, including cars that were legally exempt and were a consumer\u2019s only ride to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Massachusetts residents continue to face rising costs, they should not be subject to aggressive and unlawful debt collection practices like those Andrew Metcalf allegedly engaged in\u2026 Because of this settlement, thousands of families in the Commonwealth will be provided with debt relief and these predatory companies will never be allowed to operate in Massachusetts again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A $650,000 suspended penalty kicks in if the defendants break the deal or misrepresented their ability to pay.<\/p>\n

The judgment resolves a February 2024 Suffolk Superior Court lawsuit filed against the firm alleging violations of state consumer protection laws<\/p>\n
