Investors in Massachusetts have lost nearly $11 million after a promissory-note Ponzi scheme drained a West Springfield loan business.<\/p>\n

Barbara A. Hirshfield, 83, of Lexington, has pleaded guilty to five counts of wire fraud for running a Ponzi scheme through Ideal Financial Services Inc. and Ideal Financial Holdings, says<\/a> the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say she sold notes promising high fixed returns and told buyers the cash would fund motor vehicle and small loans, with interest paid from borrower repayments.<\/p>\n

State regulators flagged Ideal\u2019s finances in 2012 and later stripped its licenses to issue those loans, cutting off its main revenue.<\/p>\n

Hirshfield kept raising outside money anyway and used fresh investments to cover interest and principal owed to earlier noteholders, blaming banking issues, fraud, data breaches and lost checks when payments slipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is alleged that Hirshfield used money obtained from new investments to make interest and principal payments owed to earlier investors, operating Ideal as a Ponzi scheme.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The scheme collapsed around June of 2025, leaving 204 victims with losses of $10,930,940, and more than 25 faced substantial financial hardship.<\/p>\n

One longtime investor, Kimberly O\u2019Connor, says<\/a> her family\u2019s stake stretched back generations and included everything she inherited from her mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a lot of excuses at that point\u2026 And that\u2019s when we started really trying to pull out money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Wire fraud carries up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.<\/p>\n
