A Texas man has admitted to altering a U.S. Treasury check to create the appearance of a massive deposit, gaining temporary access to more than $100,000 through a bank account.<\/p>\n

Authorities say 61-year-old Beaumont resident, Byron Demetrius Franklin, attempted the deposit at a Houston Walmart ATM into a USAA account in January 2025.<\/p>\n

He contacted the bank to report an error and received credit for an additional large sum while the original amount became available during verification.<\/p>\n

Franklin then made several ATM withdrawals in Beaumont over a couple of days before the bank detected the alteration and shut down the account.<\/p>\n

He has received a 27-month federal prison term after pleading guilty to bank fraud, reports KFDM<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Investigators from the U.S. Secret Service and USAA handled the case, which the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office prosecuted.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors noted the scheme unraveled rapidly once the check alteration came to light.<\/p>\n

The sentencing underscores efforts by banks and federal agencies to combat check fraud schemes targeting financial institutions.<\/p>\n

USAA has emphasized its verification processes to prevent similar unauthorized access in the future.<\/p>\n
