The Dutch central bank is shifting dozens of tonnes of its gold reserves to London from the US and Canada to improve tradability and crisis readiness.<\/p>\n

De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) says<\/a> the operation moved about 86 tonnes between March and August 2026 through a combination of sales and physical transfers.<\/p>\n

The bank sold roughly 59 tonnes in New York and bought equivalent amounts in London while moving more than 27 tonnes via its Zeist vaults without remelting bars.<\/p>\n

After the relocation, London now holds 32.1 percent of the reserves while New York and Ottawa each hold 18.5 percent.<\/p>\n

The total Dutch gold stock remains 612.4 tonnes valued at $83.77 billion at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n

De Nederlandsche Bank addressed the rationale for the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn view of increasing geopolitical unrest, DNB is strengthening its crisis preparedness. Improving the liquidity and tradability of the Dutch gold reserves is part of these preparations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen further says,<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves. We expect that we will never need to use them, but we do need to strengthen our resilience and preparedness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

President Olaf Sleijpen added that the step improves deployability while noting the bank assumes it will never need to use the gold.<\/p>\n

London was selected because it allows the quickest deployment in emergencies.<\/p>\n

Gold is trading at $4,480 per ounce at time of writing.<\/p>\n
