A Louisiana man has lost $30,000 of his life savings after scammers allegedly impersonated bank fraud investigators and convinced him to hand over the money.<\/p>\n

The 82-year-old Northshore resident, who is chronically ill, was targeted after his daughter received a call from a number that appeared to belong to the fraud department of Hancock Whitney Bank, reports<\/a> 4WWL.<\/p>\n

The caller claimed to be investigating suspicious activity involving the man\u2019s account and said they were trying to identify a bank employee involved in the alleged fraud.<\/p>\n

According to the victim\u2019s family, the caller instructed the elderly man to visit his bank and withdraw $30,000. He was allegedly told the money would be placed in an escrow account and returned the following morning.<\/p>\n

Instead, the scammers allegedly told him to take the cash home, place it inside his mailbox and wait for someone to collect it.<\/p>\n

The victim remained on the phone throughout the bank visit, with the caller allegedly monitoring the transaction as he withdrew the money.<\/p>\n

The $30,000 represented roughly 40% of the man\u2019s life savings. He and his late wife had accumulated the money over three decades while working as small-town dairy farmers.<\/p>\n

After returning home and placing the cash in the mailbox as instructed, the family believes the victim may have been followed from the bank. According to his daughter, a small silver SUV arrived less than five minutes later, took the money and drove away.<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s family said he has been devastated by what happened and repeatedly questioned how he could have fallen for the scheme.<\/p>\n

The Washington Parish Sheriff\u2019s Department is investigating the incident and said recovering the stolen savings may be difficult. Authorities also confirmed they are looking into multiple suspected fraud cases.<\/p>\n
