A former federal law enforcement officer has admitted to diverting cash sent by elderly victims to fund a lavish lifestyle.<\/p>\n

The individual, Scott Kelley of Pembroke, Massachusetts, who led a mail fraud unit in Boston, faces dozens of federal charges after allegedly intercepting nearly 2,000 packages containing money mailed by elderly targets, reports<\/a> the New Bedford Guide.<\/p>\n

Kelley has pleaded<\/a> guilty to charges of stealing more than $330,000 and money laundering, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors identified seven victims with an average age of 75 who lost funds in the scheme.<\/p>\n

Authorities say the stolen cash financed escorts, a pool patio featuring granite countertops and specialized lighting, plus expenses for Caribbean cruises.<\/p>\n

The former federal law enforcement officer also stands accused of taking $7,000 from an evidence locker and shifting blame onto a subordinate.<\/p>\n

Indictment documents outline 45 counts covering wire fraud, mail fraud, mail theft, money laundering, structuring transactions, and false tax filings.<\/p>\n

The defendant has agreed to plead guilty to 44 of those counts.<\/p>\n

A change-of-plea hearing occurred on July 29th in federal court.<\/p>\n

Background details confirm the individual served as team leader of the Mail Fraud Unit from 2015 to 2022 before transferring to the Mail Theft Unit until 2023.<\/p>\n

During that period, the unit specifically probed lottery and elder-targeted scams.<\/p>\n

Additional reporting from the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office highlights how the perpetrator used deceptive methods to reroute flagged packages containing cash payments intended for scammers.<\/p>\n

The case underscores vulnerabilities in mail-handling processes designed to recover victim funds.<\/p>\n
