U.S. debt is growing rapidly and now requires the Treasury to refinance enormous sums of maturing obligations at elevated interest rates.<\/p>\n

The US national debt has hit more than $39 trillion, with much of it originally sold when yields were below 2% and now must be renewed amid 10-year rates near 4.7%, reports 24\/7 Wall St<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As older Treasury securities issued at lower interest rates mature, the government must refinance them by issuing new debt at today\u2019s higher market rates, increasing the cost of servicing the national debt. Data shows<\/a> that the US government paid $857 billion from October 2025 to June 2026 to cover the net interest on its public debt.<\/p>\n

The 10-year rates are now hovering at the highest level since before the 2007 financial crisis. Meanwhile, the 30-year reached 5.182%, and the 2-year stood at 4.343%.<\/p>\n

Debt has surged by about $16 trillion since 2020 and stands on track to surpass $50 trillion before the end of the decade.<\/p>\n

Rising yields on long-dated bonds come as Brent crude prices have climbed above $100 per barrel and weekly jobless claims dropped to 187,000 against expectations of 212,000, prompting some Federal Reserve officials to consider a rate increase this year.<\/p>\n

The federal funds rate upper bound has remained steady at 3.75% since late 2025.<\/p>\n

Higher yields are pushing up costs for mortgages, auto loans and business borrowing across the economy. Corporate profit growth slowed markedly from 6% to 1.7% quarter over quarter, suggesting that cumulative rate pressure is starting to take its toll.<\/p>\n

These pressures coincide with a broader economic backdrop where debt service expenses consume a larger share of federal outlays than in prior decades.<\/p>\n
