A Pennsylvania man has lost $44,000 after scammers impersonating bank officials tricked him into wiring funds to another account.<\/p>\n

The victim, an 83-year-old resident of Pine Township in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, contacted authorities after realizing the deception, reports<\/a> the NBC-affiliated TV station WFMJ.<\/p>\n

According to WFMJ, it all started after the 83-year-old got a phone call from someone pretending to be a bank representative. The caller alerted him that his account had been targeted for fraud and the 83-year-old consequently wired $44,000 to a Wells Fargo account after being convinced that his bank account had been compromised.<\/p>\n

State police classified the incident as theft by deception following the man\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

Wells Fargo has repeatedly stated that it never asks customers to move funds to themselves or others during such calls.<\/p>\n

Wire transfers deposit money directly into the recipient\u2019s account and typically cannot be reversed even when fraud occurs. Scammers using sophisticated tactics to commit fraud typically prefer payment channels or money transfer methods that make it hard or impossible to reverse or cancel a transaction once completed.<\/p>\n

Bank imposter schemes often target older adults and pressure victims to act quickly without verification.<\/p>\n

The company advises hanging up on suspicious calls and contacting the bank directly through official channels to confirm any issues.<\/p>\n
