A Charlotte woman lost thousands of dollars after receiving a call from a scammer masquerading as a representative of her bank.<\/p>\n

Nicole Gilley says she\u2019s $9,000 poorer after a scammer reached out to her using a caller ID that matched her bank\u2019s name, reports<\/a> Gulf Coast News.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sounded very professional. Like, \u2018Hi, my name is Michael. My ID number is blah, blah, blah. I\u2019m from the business fraud department at Regents. I just wanted to discuss a purchase or whatever.’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gilley says she was initially suspicious about the call and took an extra step for verification purposes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI even verified with them, saying, \u2018Is there any way you can verify with me?\u2019 They sent me a text message off their Regions text line.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Convinced that the call was legitimate, Gilley says she believed her account at Regions Bank had been compromised and followed the caller\u2019s instructions in an effort to keep her funds safe. She adds that she handed over her account credentials to the caller.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe gave me my new credentials and told me to text back the old ones. That is what really messed me up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gilley says she has reported the theft to authorities, who are now investigating the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still so embarrassed about it. I\u2019m crying constantly because it\u2019s kind of ruined a lot.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
