An introductory town hall is scheduled for May 6 at 1500 UTC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In January, Buterin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2017145595819933745\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>wrote on X<\/span><\/a><span> that the Foundation was \u201centering a period of mild austerity\u201d to balance an aggressive technical roadmap with long-term financial sustainability. The Foundation held roughly 172,000 ETH at the time and had faced criticism for annual spending that previously reached as high as $100 million, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptopolitan.com\/ethereum-foundation-enter-period-austerity\/\"><span>Cryptopolitan\u2019s earlier reporting<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Currently, the Foundation holds over 92,500 ETH per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intel.arkm.com\/explorer\/entity\/ethereum-foundation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Arkham Intelligence<\/span><\/a><span>, having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptopolitan.com\/ethereum-foundation-sells-10000-eth-to-bitmine-via-otc-as-coin-struggles-under-2500\/\"><span>sold some of its holdings to BitMine<\/span><\/a><span> six days ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>What is the Ethereum Foundation\u2019s upcoming cohort about?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>According to the Foundation\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2026\/04\/30\/epf-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>protocol support team<\/span><\/a><span>, the coming cohort will be smaller compared to previous rounds. The team stated that they are \u201cprioritizing depth of engagement over breadth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fellows who join the cohort will get to work more closely with the mentors, and this should also enable them to make \u201chigher-impact contributions to the projects they take on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The program targets software engineers with a solid technical foundation who are self-directed and motivated by open-source work. The makeup has always revolved around gathering a diverse group with the goal of advancing Ethereum\u2019s roadmap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fellows will contribute to client implementations, testing, specifications, and core protocol research. Past participants have joined client teams and remained long-term contributors, according to the Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The May 13 application deadline will determine the size and composition of the cohort. Buterin\u2019s January commitment to personal austerity, including earmarking 16,384 ETH for ecosystem goals over five years, set expectations that the Foundation would do more with less.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>How did Ethereum use its resources in Q1?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>A day before the EPF7 announcement, the Foundation\u2019s Ecosystem Support Program published its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2026\/04\/29\/allocation-q1-26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Q1 2026 allocation update<\/span><\/a><span>.
