Morgan Stanley is accelerating its bitcoin and crypto strategy, but the bank\u2019s digital asset head says it\u2019s the result of years of preparation, not a sudden rush to catch up.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit on Tuesday, Amy Oldenburg emphasized that Wall Street\u2019s move into digital assets reflects a long-term effort to modernize financial infrastructure. \u201cWe\u2019ve been on a journey around the entire modernization of financial infrastructure for years,\u201d she said, rejecting the idea that banks are acting out of fear of missing out.<\/p>\n

Morgan Stanley has expanded beyond indirect crypto exposure<\/a>, such as wealthy client bitcoin funds, to offer spot ETFs on its E*Trade platform and has filed to launch its own bitcoin ETF.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the bank plans to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in the second half of 2026.<\/p>\n

Oldenburg noted the challenges remain significant. Upgrading legacy systems, coordinating across a global network, and integrating with complex banking infrastructure all slow progress. \u201cWe can\u2019t just modernize on our own,\u201d she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even amid volatile token prices, institutional activity is quietly growing. Stablecoins and faster settlement tools are gaining traction, signaling that Wall Street\u2019s deeper crypto integration is underway \u2014 gradually, but steadily.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a natural progression,\u201d Oldenburg said at Strategy World. \u201cWe can\u2019t just primarily rent the technology to do this. People expect Morgan Stanley \u2013 they trust our brand \u2013 to be no fail\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Morgan Stanley\u2019s bitcoin ETF is coming<\/h2>\n

Back in January, Morgan Stanley filed<\/a> with U.S. regulators to launch a spot bitcoin ETF, the first major U.S. bank to pursue a fund tied directly to bitcoin\u2019s price.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The proposed Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust would hold bitcoin directly, rather than using futures or derivatives, joining firms like BlackRock and Fidelity in the growing $120 billion market for spot bitcoin ETFs.<\/p>\n

Phong Le, CEO of Strategy, called<\/a> Morgan Stanley\u2019s proposed bitcoin ETF a \u201cMonster Bitcoin\u201d bet, estimating that a modest 2% allocation across the bank\u2019s $8 trillion wealth platform could drive $160 billion into BTC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The fund, set to trade<\/a> under the ticker MSBT on NYSE Arca, would hold bitcoin directly and use BNY Mellon and Coinbase for custodial and administrative services.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Le highlighted that even a small allocation by wealth managers could exceed flows seen in existing ETFs like BlackRock\u2019s iShares Bitcoin Trust.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Morgan Stanley has begun offering spot BTC ETFs to clients, SEC approval for the new fund is still pending.<\/p>\n
