\u201cConcentrated power is not rendered harmless by the good intentions of those who create it.\u201d \u2013 Milton Friedman<\/em><\/p>\n

Discord\u2019s move to\u00a0require age verification<\/a>\u00a0through facial recognition and ID scans arrives wrapped in the language of protection. But it\u2019s actually a blueprint for something more troubling:\u00a0normalizing surveillance in the name of safety<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no real way to know how many Bitcoin-focused Discord groups there are, but there\u2019s no doubt that Discord is an often-reached-for tool in our ecosystem\u2019s toolbox.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The rationales presented by Discord are, by now, familiar. But while KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements, as stated, serve noble purposes, they are little more than ratcheting screws in practice.\u00a0\u00a0Each requirement normalizes the next. Each new baseline becomes\u00a0tomorrow\u2019s minimum. The Overton window moves.<\/p>\n

Our movement is skeptical of concentrated power no matter its source\u2014particularly the power to know, track, and categorize citizens. This is true whether that power comes from governments, corporations and, more narrowly, online community platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Discord presents its move as inevitable. It\u2019s not. I know that Discord isn\u2019t trying to harm anyone. The company genuinely believes it\u2019s protecting users. But good intentions don\u2019t prevent the drift. They accelerate it. There\u2019s also the risk that\u00a0the collected data becomes exposed<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luckily, there are alternatives. As with Linux and even Bitcoin itself, the open-source approach presents the solution. Alternatives that invert the power dynamic\u2014where users control their keys and platforms can\u2019t\u2014are quietly gaining traction.<\/p>\n

Open Source Beats a Tightened Fist<\/strong><\/p>\n

Open-source platforms built on federation models\u2014services like\u00a0Fedi<\/u><\/a>\u2014don\u2019t require identity verification to participate. They\u2019re privacy-by-design, not privacy-theater. They may be slower to scale and lack Discord\u2019s network effects, but they\u2019re also immune to the pressure that turns \u201csafety features\u201d into surveillance infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0Nostr<\/u><\/a>\u2014a censorship-resistant protocol built on cryptographic keys instead of usernames and passwords\u2014represents another alternative. With Nostr, you don\u2019t create an account with a company but, rather, a keypair. That key is yours. No verification. No ID. No biometrics. No company between you and your data.<\/p>\n

The protocol is still young. The user experience needs work. But the architecture is sound:\u00a0you own your identity, not a platform<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This matters more than it sounds. On Discord, your account is Discord\u2019s property. On Nostr, your account is mathematically yours. You can move between relay servers\u2014the infrastructure layer\u2014without losing your identity or your social graph. You can\u2019t be deplatformed because there\u2019s no platform to deplatform you from.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just Discord. It\u2019s TikTok facing potential regulation. It\u2019s Instagram adding identity verification for creators. It\u2019s the entire social internet moving inch by inch toward a future where participation requires documentation.<\/p>\n

The Moves We\u2019re Making<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re at an inflection point. Over the next few years, communities like\u00a0Bitcoin Park<\/u><\/a>\u2018s 1,000+-person Discord will migrate to alternatives. We\u2019re\u00a0slowly\u00a0moving\u00a0ours across multiple platforms\u2014Fedi for federated communication, Nostr for censorship-resistant social layers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is not because our members are doing anything wrong and most certainly\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0because we have something to hide. We believe people deserve infrastructure that respects\u00a0privacy and sovereignty as principles<\/em>.<\/p>\n

These tools are unglamorous and slower to adopt, but they\u2019re getting better. And they\u2019re the only infrastructure that genuinely inverts the power dynamic\u2014putting users in control rather than platforms.<\/p>\n

So we\u2019re choosing tools that can\u2019t be turned off. Not because we\u2019re paranoid but because, on behalf of the communities we serve, we\u2019re paying attention.<\/p>\n
