The director of a Los Angeles-based charity is accused of stealing at least $10 million from a trove of cash that was meant to help the homeless.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Justice says<\/a> 42-year-old Abundant Blessings CEO Alexander Soofer received more than $23 million in homeless housing funds between 2018 and 2025.<\/p>\n

But he allegedly used a huge chunk of the cash to buy a $7 million house in Westwood, a $125,000 Range Rover, private school tuition for his children, private jet travel and stays at luxury resorts.<\/p>\n

Federal charges include wire fraud, with up to 20 years if convicted. State charges add<\/a> 11 counts of conflict of interest, two counts of offering false evidence and five counts of forgery.<\/p>\n

First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli says the arrest highlights a renewed focus on fraud in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia is the poster child of rampant fraud, waste, and abuse of tax dollars. The state has facilitated the spending of billions of dollars to combat homelessness, with little to show for it and almost no oversight. <\/em><\/p>\n

Thankfully, the federal government has begun auditing California\u2019s spending and today\u2019s is just one example of how fraudsters have swindled millions of dollars from taxpayers. This money should have gone to those in need, instead in lines the pockets of individuals subsidizing their lavish lifestyle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
